The last GS-4 engines were de-skirted and painted black in 1956; a GS-4 pulled its last passenger train in January 1957. All were retired by 1958. GS-4 number 4443 pulled one of the final steam excursions on the Southern Pacific in 1957. Some GS-4s remained black after the war, while others were restored to their original colors.

The Kato GS-4 Wartime Black and Morning Daylight locomotive are a triumph of N scale design, combining sophisticated modern engineering techniques and old-school styling. With an innovative spring suspension, fully functional metal siderods, and a powerful Kato drive, the GS-4 can pull an 18+ consist up a 4% grade, completely unassisited. The GS-4 and Morning Daylight have been hailed as the most beautiful train in America and Kato has gone to great lengths to capture that essence in N scale.

The GS-4 runs on eight massive 80 drivers, 300lbs psi boiler pressure, and puts out a roaring 5,500 horsepower at 55mph, with a maximum speed of 110 mph. The large drivers gave the locomotive a high top speed, the telling mark of a steam engine built for passenger service.

The GS-4 was built for the Southern Pacific Railroad by the Lima Locomotive Works and delivered in the early 1940s for the SPs premier passenger trains, finding its way to the Daylight series of name trains. One of the more unique specifications for the GS-4 by the SP was its Mars light, a necessity with the large amount of grade crossings and fog present on the West Coast. The Mars light, like ditch lights on modern locomotives, was utilized as a warning for grade crossings that a high speed train was approaching, its shifting light patterns serving as an eye catcher in foggy conditions.

DCC/Sound (ESU N 73800 LokSound Select Micro DCC Sound Decoder). Designed to accompany the Kato Southern Pacific Morning Daylight Passenger Train sets. Able to pull all 18 Daylight cars without assistance, even up a 4% grade. Drivers are operated by functional side rods for smooth performance.

Directional, operating (simulated) Mars light. Front and rear Kato magnetic knuckle couplers. Will be listing many other N scale locomotives and passenger cars from part of a larger collection.
